Perfect Hatchet

Very good service. My question was answered promptly and this has fit my needs perfectly. An ideal axe for camping. I returned recently from five days and it did what I wanted, splitting an assortment of firewood with two hands very nicely.I also required a limb to support my tarp…it trimmed it with no effort using one hand. Highly recommend this product and Axeman.ca. Thank you!

5 Stars

I have many GB and hultafors axes and this was a huge surprise. Not only was the fit and finish pristine but the grind was spot and on as well. I bought this axe specifically for splitting seasoned firewood and it blows through its not even there, I took it in the bush as well to see how it did on greenwood trees and it bit through nicely. Maybe not as good as a thinner profiled axe like the forest axe but the difference was nearly unnoticeable. The stock sheath isn’t great but there are many aftermarket options out there. Great axe, enough said.

Great all-purpose tool for the outdoors

This is a fantastic axe. Took it camping and handled all fire-related splitting. Brought with me on a canoe trip to clear sweepers and though it's not meant to be your primary splitting axe I could help but use it to chop some fresh cut ash rounds at the family cottage. Axeman offered some quality advice and the service was incredible. Very pleased.

What You Should Know Before Purchasing Hultafors Hatchet (0.9 kg, 20 inch Shaft)

When choosing an axe, the blade material is a critical factor that influences its performance, durability, and suitability for specific tasks.

OXHEAD AXE SPLITTNG 5LB OX-HEAD 32" HICKORY HANDLE - Axeman.ca

Here are the common types of materials used for axe blades:

  • Hand-Forged Swedish Steel: Crafted in the historic forge at Hults Bruk, the axe head is made from premium Swedish steel.
  • Hardened Forged Steel: blade stays sharp longer than traditional axes.
  • Stainless Steel: More resistant to corrosion, but slightly less durable compared to carbon steel.

Factors to Consider When Choosing an Axe Handle Material

Selecting the right handle material for your axe depends on a balance of factors including intended use, comfort, maintenance, and personal preference.

Hultafors Premium Overstrike Guard - Axeman.ca

Here are the common types of materials used for axe handles:

1. Hickory Handles: Known for its excellent strength and shock absorption.

2. Shock-absorbing FiberComp® handle is lightweight yet stronger than steel to prevent overstrike damage.

3. Glass-Filled Nylon: Lightweight and resistant to moisture and decay, though they may not be as durable under heavy use.

4. Rubber Overmolded Handles: Feature a core material (like fiberglass or steel) covered with rubber for improved grip and vibration dampening.

Frequently Asked Questions about Axes & Hatchets?

Selecting the perfect axe depends on the tasks you plan to perform. For general, all-purpose use, a good rule of thumb is to hold the axe head in your hand with the handle pointing downward—the end of the handle should reach your armpit. Larger axes are ideal for felling trees, while smaller hatchets are great for splitting kindling and lighter duties.

We provide a comprehensive selection of axes to suit all your needs. Our inventory includes felling axes for cutting down trees, splitting axes and mauls for processing firewood, hatchets for camping and light chores, carpenter axes for woodworking projects, and specialized arborist saws. We also carry renowned brands like Gränsfors, Fiskars, Hultafors, and Ochsenkopf.

Selecting the perfect axe depends on the job at hand:

  • Felling Trees: Opt for a felling axe with a long handle and sharp blade designed to cut across the wood grain.
  • Splitting Logs: A splitting axe or maul with a heavy, wedge-shaped head is ideal for splitting wood along the grain.
  • Camping and Kindling: A hatchet or small hand axe is perfect for light chopping and easy to carry.
  • Carpentry and Woodworking: Choose a carpenter's axe for precision and control in detailed work.
