The New Hults Bruk Axe Lineup Is Coming to Canada, and Axeman.ca Is Bringing It Here First

There is a forge in Kvillinge parish, just outside Norrköping, Sweden, that has been making iron and steel since 1697. That is Hults Bruk. Three hundred and twenty-nine years later they are still hand-forging axes on the same ground, and this fall they are doing something they have not done in a long time: releasing a complete new lineup of axes, along with new names for the classics you already know.

Watch Buckin' Billy Ray Inside the Hults Bruk Forge

Before we get to the axes, a recommendation. Our good friend Buckin' Billy Ray Smith recently spent time in Sweden with Anders Haglund and the Hults Bruk team, and he filmed the whole thing. If you have ever wondered what "hand-forged" actually means, his videos show you. Glowing steel, open-die forging, the hand grinding, the sharpening, and the people who have spent their working lives doing it.

What Is Actually New at Hults Bruk

Two things are happening at once, and it helps to keep them separate.

First, five brand-new axes. These are a new forge-black series built on what Hults Bruk calls a refined Yankee-pattern head. American-style felling geometry, forged in Sweden. They range from a 15-inch camp hatchet up to a 26-inch felling axe.

Second, new names for the classic line. The axes many of you already own have been renamed after the places, rivers, farms and smiths around the forge. The Kisa is now the Qvarfot. The Motala is now the Wetterhall. The Sarek is now the Hult. Same axes, same steel, names with a story behind them.

What has not changed is the steel and the process. Every Hults Bruk axe head is hand-forged from a proprietary Swedish axe steel, hardened to 54 to 56 HRC, hand-sharpened, and stamped with the Hults Bruk mark. Handles are American hickory treated with linseed oil. Every axe ships with a vegetable-tanned full-grain leather sheath. The steel is produced CO2-neutral and is fully recyclable. Hand-forged tools vary a little in weight and finish, and that is part of owning one.

The Five New Forge-Black Yankee-Pattern Axes

This is the series to watch. Hults Bruk describes the geometry as a higher grind that improves edge durability and helps the bit release cleanly through repeated chopping. In plain terms, it bites deep, throws a bigger chip, and does not stick. The forge-black finish is left on the head rather than polished off.

Bråbo Felling Axe

The heaviest axe in the new series and the one for real work: felling medium-sized trees, limbing, and processing firewood. A 2.6 lb head on a 26-inch handle gives you a proper two-handed swing while staying light enough to carry all day.

Rodga Forest Axe

Hults Bruk calls this "the kind of axe that naturally becomes a constant companion in the woods," and that is a fair description. Same 26-inch reach as the Bråbo with a lighter 2 lb head, so it swings faster and tires you less. Light felling, limbing, trail work, firewood.

Getå Forest Axe

Named for the Getå area of Kolmården, this is the compact forest axe. A 2 lb head on a 20-inch curved handle is the sweet spot for a canoe, a pack, or behind the truck seat. Enough head to fell smaller trees and buck firewood, short enough to work one-handed at camp.

Sätra Hatchet

Named after Sätra Farm, an outlying farm tied to the mill that traces its roots to the 14th century. The Sätra is a longer-handled hatchet, 17 inches, which gives you more reach and a little more power than a standard hatchet while keeping one-handed control. Kindling, camp chores, garden work, light chopping.

Pjältån Hatchet

The smallest in the series, named after the Pjältån river near the forge. A 1.3 lb head on a 15-inch handle for kindling, carving and the quiet daily tasks around a campsite. Hults Bruk describes it as approachable for all experience levels, and it would make a very good first Swedish axe.

A few highlights worth knowing. The Qvarfot, Hultån and Ågelsjön keep their Turpentine-pattern heads with the finger notch behind the bit, which is what makes them so good for carving and detail work. The Jursla is a Montreal-pattern felling axe, the classic Canadian bush profile. The Arvika is a true racing axe with a 5.5-inch edge. And the Wetterhall double bit is one of the few production double bits still hand-forged anywhere.

These axes are built to be sharpened for decades. Keep the edge honest with a puck or a stone from our sharpening collection, wipe a little oil on the head after wet days, and store it in its leather sheath. Hults Bruk makes replacement sheaths and hickory handles for every model, and we will be stocking those as well. A good axe should outlive you, and with a little care it will.
