On every outdoor adventure I have been on a Silky Saw is always one of the top 5 items I always carry. Whether it’s on a hike, snowmobile trip or ATV excursion, the Silky Saw is always with us. Silky has proven itself time and time again to be a solid, well-made tool and a must for any outdoor adventure.
Why Silky?
Well, it is small, portable, light-weight and incredibly sharp. So sharp, in fact, that one person reviewed the product and said “It cuts slightly slower” than his chain saw!! Blade lengths for the new Silky Outback Edition Saws range from 6.7 inches to 14.2 inches.
Chose the right saw
Every adventure has its own criteria. Sometimes it is weight over function and other times it is the opposite. Lucky enough, Silky has a great size range to work with. I personally feel that the Silky Outback Gomboy Curve Professional is a great overall size. With a blade size of 9.5 inches and a weight of just 0.63 pounds it’s a great outdoorsman’s saw for small diameter trees and limbs but also cuts bone which makes it a great pack saw for hunters. The unique, new black-plated, highly durable Nickel/Tin blend provides longer blade life and improved cutting performance.
The Silky Outback Edition hand saws feature a handle made of arbor composite which provides excellent grip and control for wet, cold and game-processing conditions. The blade can cut bone and wood and is black-plated with a Nickel/Tin blend to improve durability and reduce reflection for stealth, low-impact activities.
“The Silky Gomboy Outback is outstanding! First Silky I've ever used and it will not be the last.”
The Silky Gomboy Outback Curve features a blade with 6.8 teeth per inch. Those teeth are Non-Set Teeth and taper ground to reduce resistance for smoother, easier and faster cutting. This has been a big factor in it’s popularity with hunters. The new Outback Edition hand saws feature a handle made of arbor composite which provides excellent grip and control for wet, cold and game-processing conditions.
The unique, new black-plated, highly durable Nickel/Tin blend provides longer blade life and improved cutting performance. Another benefit of the black-plated blade is concealment – sometimes a shiny polished metal blade is not what your covert op requires.
All of the Outback Edition saws have a dual blade lock system which allows for cutting at different angles which comes in handy when cutting over your head. The integrated locking system is spring loaded and firmly locks the blade into place.
The Silky Outback Edition hand saws feature a handle made of arbor composite which provides excellent grip and control for wet, cold and game-processing conditions. The blade can cut bone and wood and I have seen this for myself in the field. There has been more then one occasion when my saw, which was strapped to the rear of the ATV, was covered in mud when I rolled up on a blocked path and needed my slimy, wet saw. I know what you’re thinking….why wasn’t this in a case? Let’s just say it was a life lesson for the AXEMAN. Although it was covered in Cariboo, BC mud, it performed incredible and the handle was secure in my hand. Needless to say, the Outback saws amaze me every time I use them.
What Saw to buy?
If you’re a car-camper looking to save money on a $12 bundle of fire wood, then a Silky Bigboy Outback is the one I would recommend. With a blade length of 14.4 inches and a handle with room for two hands make cutting wood a breeze. This also is a great saw for your ATV but I can recommend using the nice black cloth case! The Bigboy is my go-to in situations where weight and size isn’t a big deal. In my truck it fits nicely under the backseat and has saved a few big scratches down the side of my truck when we found a fallen tree partly blocking the road. Only a few minutes of cutting and I easily cleared the road and my paint job.
One Outback Saw I haven’t mentioned yet but definitely has it’s place is the Silky Outback Pocketboy. This small yet powerful saw is a perfect pack saw. With a 6.7 inch blade it will fit in any pack and be worth it’s weight in gold when you’re setting up your camp for the night. I would also recommend this saw for any emergency kit. It has all the incredible features as the other Outbacks but in a smaller size.
I would also like to take a minute to talk about two other essential items.
First, is the knife. The Hultafors OK4. It has been described as a high quality knife and at a very reasonable price. The fine detail work of a good knife should never be underestimated.
And my personal favorite, the Axe! Every good saw should be accompanied by an axe. Just as there are different sizes of saws for each job, there are also different sizes of axes for different types of jobs. As an all-round great camp axe I can confidently recommend the Hultafors Aby and the Ekelund. Take a look at the large selection at AXEMAN.ca to find your perfect axe.
We are looking for AXEMAN.ca outdoor Ambassadors so please send us your experiences and photos to have your chance to be an AXEMAN.ca Ambassador.
