How to Protect Your Axe Head and Handle: Essential Care Tips for Long-Lasting Performance

How to Protect Your Axe Head and Handle: Essential Care Tips for Long-Lasting Performance

Whether you're deep in the BC backcountry or splitting firewood at the cabin, your axe is only as good as the care you give it. A well-maintained axe doesn’t just perform better — it lasts longer, stays safer, and becomes a trusted tool you can pass down through generations. Here’s how to protect your axe head and axe handle using time-tested methods and some must-have products available at Axeman.ca.

Why Axe Maintenance Matters

Your axe faces the elements — rain, snow, mud, and UV rays. Without regular care, your tool can rust, crack, dry out, or lose its bite. The good news? A few simple steps can preserve your axe’s life and improve its performance season after season.

Protecting Your Axe Handle: Boiled Linseed Oil Is Your Best Friend

The best way to protect your wooden axe handle is with boiled linseed oil (BLO) — a traditional, natural finish that soaks deep into wood fibers and hardens over time, adding durability and water resistance.

How to Apply Boiled Linseed Oil:

  1. Clean the handle with a dry cloth to remove dirt and dust.

  2. Apply a generous coat of boiled linseed oil with a rag or brush.

  3. Let it soak in for 20–30 minutes, then wipe off excess oil.

  4. Allow to dry for 24 hours.

  5. Repeat monthly during heavy use, or seasonally for stored axes.

⚠️ WARNING: Rags soaked in boiled linseed oil can spontaneously combust if left bunched up. Always lay rags flat to dry outdoors, or dispose of them in a sealed metal container.

Sealing and Protecting the Head: Use Wicked Wax

To protect the axe head (and the handle too), we highly recommend Wicked Wax — an all-natural beeswax and oil blend available at Axeman.ca.

Why Wicked Wax?

  • Forms a protective barrier against moisture

  • Helps prevent rust on the steel head

  • Adds grip and durability to the wood

  • Smells great and contains no harsh chemicals

How to Use Wicked Wax:

  1. Rub a small amount of wax directly onto the steel and wood.

  2. Work it in with your fingers or a clean cloth.

  3. Let sit for 10–15 minutes.

  4. Buff off any excess.

Wicked Wax is especially great for field maintenance. Toss a tin in your pack and apply it after wet weather or heavy use.

Bonus Tip: Store Your Axe Smart

Even with perfect care, your axe won’t last if it’s stored wrong. Follow these simple rules:

  • Never store your axe wet.

  • Keep it in a cool, dry place — not in a hot shed or damp garage.

  • Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, which dries and weakens wood.

A leather sheath or blade cover is also a smart investment to protect your axe edge and prevent accidents.

Keep It Sharp, Keep It Safe

Proper axe maintenance means more than edge retention. It’s about preserving a tool you rely on. With boiled linseed oil, Wicked Wax, and a little routine care, your axe will stay strong, safe, and sharp — ready for whatever job the bush throws your way.
