Early 2026 Holdover/Zombie Fires Watch: March/April Signs in BC + Immediate Fuel-Reduction Tools & Scotty Gear Checklist

If you followed my March 7 update on early 2026 wildfire signs in British Columbia, you know we are watching closely as snow melts fast across the province. Holdover fires (also called zombie fires) from 2025 remain a real concern. These smoldering fires hide deep in peat, duff, or organic soil over winter and can flare up suddenly when conditions warm and dry out.

Right now in mid-March 2026, BC Wildfire Service reports no major active wildfires, but the dashboard emphasizes that winter is prime time for FireSmart prep like clearing debris and pruning. Snowpack lags in many areas, and forecasts show holdover risks emerging as early as late March in southern BC, with April often seeing the first re-ignitions. Warm spells, low humidity, and rapid snowmelt create perfect conditions for these hidden fires to break out, especially in the northeast, central interior, and drier valleys.

What Are Holdover/Zombie Fires and Why Watch Them Now?

Holdover fires burn slowly underground without visible flames or smoke on the surface. They survive winter in dry peat layers and reignite when spring thaw exposes them to oxygen and heat. In past years, they sparked early season activity before official fire season ramps up (April 1 onward).

Signs to watch in March/April 2026:

  • Unusual steam or smoke from the ground in burn scar areas from 2025.
  • Hot spots or warm soil in old fire zones, even under snow.
  • Pine needles or grass turning brown prematurely near suspected sites.
  • Sudden flare-ups during dry, windy days after melt.

Report anything suspicious right away: Use the BC Wildfire app, call 1-800-663-5555, or dial *5555 on your cell. Early detection stops small problems from becoming big ones.

Immediate Fuel-Reduction Steps for Properties and Trails

The best defense is reducing fuel around your home, cabin, or trails now while the ground is workable. Focus on FireSmart principles: Create defensible space and clear access routes.

Key actions this month:

  1. Clear deadfall, branches, and ladder fuels within 10 meters of structures.
  2. Thin dense brush and remove low branches on trees up to 2-3 meters.
  3. Maintain trails by cutting blowdown and creating fuel breaks.
  4. Burn piles only if registered (Category 3/4) and no restrictions apply. Check provincial bans first.

Tools make this work faster and safer.
