Splitting axe made from blasted and clear-lacquered ironwork. The heavier axe is best suited to stronger wood, while the lighter axe is best suited to basic splitting of ‘fireplace wood’. The shaft is curved and made from hickory.
I bought the Splitting axe with the curved handle. I split BC coastal fir, and I have been using a 6 lb maul and an Oxhead axe with a 2 lb head. I have shoulder trouble, so the maul is becoming too difficult for me to use for long periods of time, and the axe is too light for serious splitting. So. Something in between is what I was after. I did some research and I watched a number of videos of guys splitting firewood. I was looking for smarter rather than heavier, and the axe that drew my attention was the Hultafors Splitting Axe with the 1.5 kg head and a curved handle. I searched online for a Canadian source and found Axeman.ca. I asked a question, got a quick answer, read about the shipping...nearly immediate and, best of all, free for this purchase. Sold. I had the axe in three days, and despite medical advice I had to try it out right away. My wood has been split once, so some pieces are quite large. Knots are small but common. The unique design of the axe head lets me split smarter rather than harder. I am impressed. I split several wheelbarrow loads with moderate effort, no residual shoulder pain. Excellent. Only one negative came out of my first trials. The axe handle seems to have a linseed oil treatment. Good. The dried finish is full of sawdust. Not good. So I sanded the handle lightly and my own linseed oil treatment is drying.

Easy to use, light weight, splits logs perfectly!
Axeman did a great job shipped faster than promised and was well packaged.
The axe is ok - the handle I received has about a 70/30 mix of heart and sap wood. The grain orientation is pretty good which should be fine for me. Had to sand and refinish the handle - it was hairy like a cutting board after popping the grain with water.
Nothing that a little tuneup could not fix. Has split well so far in an old ash round. I would recommend.
